Situated in Monterotondo, Villa Sparina was founded in the 1970s by the Moccagatta family. They have spent the past five decades capitalizing on one of Gavi’s most exceptional terroirs, creating remarkable expressions of Cortese and Barber. James Suckling himself affirms that if you “don’t take Gavi seriously,” you “obviously haven’t tasted the wines of Villa Sparina.” Their relentless pursuit of quality has even garnered them the prestigious “European Winery of the Year” award at the Wine Star Awards by Wine Enthusiast.
While Villa Sparina is most recognized for its single-vineyard Gavi, their Barbera wines are game-changers in their own right. The estate’s Monferrato is a violet and berry-scented Barbera that packs a powerful juicy punch on the palate backed by supple tannins and a refreshing burst of controlled acidity. Its baby brother, the Montej Rosso includes a hint of Merlot, offering extra juiciness.
