Villa Sparina was founded by the Moccagatta family in the 1970's in the hamlet of Monterotondo. It comprises of 100 hectares of land, 70 of which are cultivated with local grapes for the production of Gavi and Barbera wine.
The unique and eye-catching bottle shape corresponds to the Roman amphorae found in the truffle-rich grounds. Montej, named after the locality, is the baby brother of the Monferrato Barbera, coming from fourteen-year-old vines, with a little Merlot added for extra juiciness.

Vintage report
In Piedmont, 2021 followed two back-to-back blockbuster vintages — 2019 and 2020 — and quietly got on with producing something rather good without much fanfare. The season was marked by a cool, wet spring that pushed back bud break and kept growers on their toes, followed by a warm, dry summer that brought the fruit back into balance. Harvest conditions were generally clean and unhurried, which in Nebbiolo country is almost always a good sign — this is a variety that rewards patience and punishes panic.
The resulting wines have real definition to them: Barolo and Barbaresco with firm, precise tannins and genuine freshness rather than the sheer weight and concentration of 2019. Barbera and Dolcetto came through in fine shape too, with bright acidity and clear varietal character. This is a vintage that rewards the curious rather than demanding the committed: some of the more structured Baroli will repay further cellaring until 2030 and beyond, but there is plenty to enjoy now for those unwilling to wait.
