Indaba takes its name from a Zulu word signifying “a meeting of the minds.” This is a fitting name given that the winery is involved in several community initiatives including the Pinotage Youth Development Academy, a program that empowers motivated, unemployed South African young adults through technical training, personal development, and work opportunities on local farms. Their own initiatives, the WELL Project (Winelands Education for Living and Learning) and Indaba Education Fund (IEF) support the education of the children of winery employees in the Cape Winelands, as well as scholarships to students pursuing wine-related studies.
Winemaker Bruwer Raats has steered the estate since 2008 while also managing wine making at the internationally celebrated Raats Family Wines. Together with the family farmers who have tended the land for generations, Bruwer works to create wines that are approachable and sustainable. All Indaba wines are Integrity and Sustainability Certified and compliant with the Integrated Production of Wine (IPW) criteria, a voluntary environmental protection program established by the South African wine industry.
