In 1983, David Hohnen’s first sip of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc inspired him to partner with winemaker Kevin Judd to found Cloudy Bay. Cloudy Bay emerged in 1985, making waves with a Sauvignon Blanc that put New Zealand on the oenophilic map. In 2003, they partnered with Veuve Clicquot, later joining the LVMH family in 2010.
Cloudy Bay is steadfast in its commitment to protecting the environment and was a founding member of Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand. In Central Otago, vineyards embrace organic farming practices, and selected estate blocks in Marlborough are pioneering organic trials set to extend across the entire expanse. Focused on quality over quantity, Cloudy Bay’s vineyard yields are around 30% lower than the regional average.
