Vintage report
The 2024 growing season in Marlborough was a demanding one. A cool, wet start to the season raised early concerns about disease pressure, and growers who weren't on top of their canopy management paid the price. The saving grace was a drier, sunnier stretch through late summer and into harvest, which gave the grapes time to ripen properly and allowed conscientious producers to pick fruit in good condition. It wasn't a vintage that rewarded complacency — but then the best Marlborough rarely does.
What came out of it, from the producers who held their nerve, is genuinely exciting: Sauvignon Blanc with real precision and cut, the kind of electric acidity that makes the variety worth arguing about, without tipping into the aggressive green end of the spectrum. Pinot Noir also looks promising, with good colour and structure from the slow ripening. These are wines drinking well now and over the next two to three years, though the better Pinots will reward a little patience.
