Vintage report
Marlborough's 2022 growing season was marked by a dry, warm summer that gave growers exactly the kind of unhurried ripening they dream about. Canopy management was critical — in a season this warm, the risk is always sun-struck, overly phenolic fruit rather than the taut, precise style the region does best. Those who managed their vines carefully were rewarded with small berries, good concentration, and harvest fruit that arrived in excellent condition. It wasn't a season that demanded heroics in the winery; it rewarded those who'd done the work in the vineyard.
The Sauvignon Blancs that came out of 2022 have more weight and texture than you'd expect from Marlborough, without sacrificing the mineral cut that makes the region's best wines worth arguing about. Pinot Noir also had a strong showing — the dry conditions kept disease pressure low and delivered some genuinely structured, age-worthy reds. The whites are drinking very well now and should hold comfortably until 2026 or 2027; the better Pinots have more runway than that.
