The 2022 Viré-Clessé Vieilles Vignes from Meurgey-Croses comes from a single vineyard, Le Mont in Clessé, with vines approaching 70 years old, matured in large 450 l foudres. On the nose it is sophisticated and herbal, showing tarragon and chamomile with a touch of citrus oils, while pear skin and yellow plum notes carry through to the palate. The wine has appealing vivacity and minerality, finishing with a subtle herbaceous lift. This is a highly complex Macôn wine, no doubt benefitting from the wisdom of the old vines — not wrinkles!
It pairs beautifully with grilled or roasted chicken, lightly spiced fish, shellfish, creamy vegetable dishes, or soft goat cheeses, where its freshness, herbal nuance and mineral tension enhance the flavours of the dish.
