Trentham Estate Shiraz is deep red in colour with cherry, cassis, mocha and mint aromas. These aromas follow onto the palate to compliment flavours of white pepper, sweet plum and vanilla. A portion of the wine was matured in a combination of new and aged French oak barrels. With robust but ripe tannins and a long, rich finish, this wine is truly a delight.
Shiraz, also known as Syrah, is thought to originate from the Rhône Valley in France and continues to be the predominant variety in the Murray Darling region. In 1831, James Busby collected cuttings from Europe to introduce the variety to Australia; these were planted in the Sydney Botanical Gardens and in the Hunter Valley. By the 1860s, Shiraz was established as one of the most important grape varieties in Australia. Australian Shiraz has developed an excellent reputation and is sought after worldwide.

The Murray Darling had a growing season in 2024 that kept growers on their toes. The region's continental climate delivered its usual extremes, but growers broadly reported a season with enough warmth to ripen fruit fully without the brutal, concentrated heat events that can strip freshness from the harvest. Careful canopy management and a willingness to pick at the right moment — rather than chasing numbers — made the difference between the wines that sing and those that simply shout.
The resulting wines lean towards freshness and definition rather than the broad, generous weight the region was once known for. Shiraz has real presence without being overblown, and the white varieties — Chardonnay in particular — are showing genuine brightness and drive. These are not wines that need years in a cellar to reveal themselves; most are drinking well now and should hold comfortably until 2027 or 2028, with the better reds perhaps going a year or two beyond that.
