Vintage report

The Murray Darling doesn't court fashionable attention, and 2023 was very much a vintage that got on with the job quietly. The region experienced a relatively warm and dry growing season overall, following the wetter La Niña-influenced years that had brought disease pressure across much of eastern Australia in the early part of the decade. That shift back towards drier conditions was broadly welcome — lower yields, better canopy management, and grapes that arrived at the winery in decent shape. It wasn't a vintage defined by drama so much as by relief.

The wines that have come through reflect that steadiness. Durif and Cabernet Sauvignon show the density and dark fruit concentration the region does well, without the jammy excess that can creep in during truly punishing summers. Whites, particularly Chardonnay, have reasonable freshness. These are not wines built for the cellar — the fruit-forward, approachable style of Murray Darling means most bottles are drinking well now and are best enjoyed before 2027.

OUR GROWERS

Trentham Estate

The Murphy family's minimal but state-of-the-art facility provides them with the flexibility to experiment with different winemaking styles, resulting in diverse but consistent single varietal wines. Brothers Anthony and Patrick have a passion for exploring lesser-known grape varieties that can thrive in the Mediterranean-like climate of the Murray Darling Region.
