Kopke's 10 Year Old Tawny is one of the great pleasure-givers in Port — no fuss, no waiting, just a glass of something genuinely lovely to drink right now. Aged in small oak casks in the lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, the wine has slowly oxidised into that characteristic amber-tawny colour, trading the dense fruit of youth for dried fruits, roasted nuts, and a long, gently sweet finish that smells faintly of a patisserie on a cool morning. At ten years, this sits in a sweet spot: old enough to have real complexity, young enough to still carry freshness.

Kopke is the oldest Port house still trading, which means they've had longer than almost anyone to work out how to do this properly. Serve it slightly chilled — around 14°C — and it transforms into something almost dangerously easy to drink.

Vintage report

Non-Vintage, or NV, simply means the wine in your glass is a blend drawn from more than one harvest rather than a single year. In the Douro Valley, where the summers can be ferociously hot one year and awkward the next, blending across harvests is a genuinely clever tool — it lets producers iron out the variables and stay true to a house style they've spent years, sometimes generations, refining. The result for you, as the person actually drinking the stuff, is reassuring consistency. Whether you're picking up a bottle now or returning to a favourite in a couple of years' time, you can reasonably expect the same character, the same personality, the same wine you fell for in the first place. It's less about vintage drama and more about the winemaker's signature — a deliberate, considered style rather than a snapshot of any single season.

Tasting Notes

AppearanceWarm amber-tawny with a paler, slightly orange rim — classic for a decade of cask ageing.

NoseRoasted walnut and hazelnut lead, with dried apricot, orange peel, and a whisper of vanilla from the oak. There's a faint nuttiness — almost like a dry oloroso Sherry — that gives it real character without weight.

PalateMedium-sweet with a silky, rounded texture and none of the cloying heaviness that lesser Tawnies can fall into. Dried fig, caramel, and a hint of spice from the wood; the acidity is quiet but present, keeping things honest.

FinishClean, moderately long, and nutty, fading with a gentle warmth from the spirit rather than a burn.

Overall impressionA textbook 10 Year Old that earns its place as one of the most reliably delicious things you can pour from a Port bottle.

Food Pairings

In Porto, a glass of Tawny at this age is as natural with the cheese board as a handshake — particularly with aged Manchego or a crumbly Queijo da Serra. The Portuguese would also pair it without hesitation with pastéis de nata, the custard tarts that are practically a food group in themselves. Almonds and walnuts are a natural match given the wine's own nutty character, so a simple bowl of them alongside is never wrong. Further into a meal, it holds its own with a slice of rich, dense chocolate tart — the sweetness of the wine meeting the bitterness of the cocoa in a way that feels almost engineered.

FAQs

What does Kopke 10 Year Old Tawny taste like?

Think roasted hazelnuts, dried apricot, orange peel, and caramel, with a silky texture and a clean, nutty finish. It's sweet but not heavy, and there's a gentle warmth from the spirit that rounds everything out.

When should I drink this?

Right now. This is not a wine that needs more time — it's been aged and blended specifically to be delicious on release. Drink it from now until 2036, though frankly most bottles don't survive that long once opened.

Does it need to be decanted?

No decanting needed. Pour straight from the bottle into a tulip-shaped glass, ideally after a short spell in the fridge to bring it down to around 14°C. That slight chill makes a real difference to how fresh and lively it tastes.

What food should I serve it with?

Aged cheeses, salted almonds, and Portuguese custard tarts are the classics. It also works brilliantly with chocolate-based desserts — the bitterness of good dark chocolate and the sweetness of the Tawny balance each other well.

How long does it keep once opened?

Several weeks, easily. The fortification and oxidative style mean it's far more robust once opened than a table wine. Keep it recorked in the fridge and it will stay in good shape.

What makes Kopke worth choosing over other Tawny producers?

Kopke is the oldest Port house in existence, founded in 1638, and their Tawny programme is one of the things they're most respected for. The 10 Year Old consistently punches above its price point, with a precision to the blending that gives it real character rather than just sweetness.

OUR GROWERS

KOPKE

Founded in 1638 by Christoff Kopke, a German consul in Lisbon, Kopke is widely regarded as the oldest Port house in existence. Now part of the Sogevinus group, it retains a distinct identity built on meticulous lodge ageing and a particularly strong reputation for Tawny and Colheita styles. Their consistency across decades of blending is one of the things that separates the serious houses from the rest.
