Founded in 1638, Kopke is officially the oldest Port house, with nearly four centuries of history behind it. The house acquired its first Douro vineyard in 1781 and Quinta de São Luiz in 1922, which remains at the heart of the operation today. Kopke has built its reputation on traditional Douro Port, with a particular speciality in aged styles. Its 10 and 20 Year Old Tawny Ports are classic examples: blends of wines matured in oak for different lengths of time, with the average age defining the style on the label. The 10 Year Old is rich and smooth, with dried fruit, spice, honey and subtle wood, while the 20 Year Old takes things further into more complex dried fruit, nuts and spice.

The combination of long oak ageing, traditional Douro varieties and Kopke’s huge stocks of mature wine gives the house a real depth of experience when it comes to Port. If you want to understand what Port can become with time, Kopke is one of the names worth knowing.
