Didier Desvignes Domaine du Calvaire de Roche-Grès Moulin-à-Vent Terre De Manganèse, in its heavy bottle, suggests from the outset an altogether more serious wine than Didier Desvignes' regular cuvées.
The colour is atypically deep for a Beaujolais and the nose initially offers balsamic and feral aromas before opening up with ripe cherry fruit and touches of oak spice. The palate, as you might expect, shows greater extraction and concentration than many a Beaujolais, displaying opulent dark cherry fruit, delicate spice and nicely integrated oak.
Although very drinkable already, this age-worthy Beaujolais has the capacity to evolve into something really quite Burgundian over the next five to ten years.

Vintage report
The 2019 growing season in Beaujolais started with a bang — literally. Hail battered vineyards across the region in June, reducing yields but concentrating what remained on the vines. A blistering summer followed, with temperatures soaring well above average and precious little rain to cool things down. By harvest time in early September, growers were picking healthy, sun-scorched grapes with thick skins and intense concentration — quite different from the fresh, gulpable style Beaujolais had built its reputation on.
What emerged was a vintage that split opinion faster than a corkscrew argument. The Gamay grapes produced wines with deeper colour and more structured tannins than usual, showing blackberry and plum flavours rather than the typical bright red fruits. Some producers embraced this richer style, whilst others found themselves swimming against the current of their own terroir. The wines are drinking well now but have the backbone to age until 2027 — unusual longevity for a region better known for immediate pleasure than cellar-worthy bottles.
