Vintage report
Darling sits close enough to the Atlantic to catch the cooling influence of the Benguela Current, which generally keeps ripening slow and temperatures honest — but 2021 tested that buffer. The Western Cape experienced a run of warm, dry conditions through the growing season, with water stress a real concern across the region. Darling's coastal position offered some relief, but yields were down and growers had to pick their moments carefully. Those who managed canopy and water well brought in fruit with real concentration and freshness intact; those who didn't found the heat left its fingerprints.
The result is a vintage of taut, focused wines rather than generous, easy-going ones. Chenin Blanc — the region's calling card — performed particularly well for those who harvested before the heat took hold, producing wines with real grip and citrus-driven intensity. Syrah, which Darling does rather brilliantly, shows dark fruit with a firm, savoury backbone. These aren't wines to rush. Most are drinking well now with food, but the better examples will reward another two to four years in the cellar.
