Vintage report
Walker Bay in 2022 had the kind of growing season this corner of the Western Cape does best: cool, drawn-out, and unhurried, with the Benguela Current doing its usual work keeping temperatures in check. The season was broadly dry, which kept disease pressure low and allowed growers to leave fruit on the vine long enough for phenolic ripeness without chasing sugar. That patience shows in the wines. Harvest came in good order, and the combination of freshness and concentration that Walker Bay can achieve when things go right was very much on display.
The results across the region are genuinely exciting. Pinot Noir has real depth and definition without feeling heavy, and the Chardonnays have that taut, mineral-driven character the region does so well — think Hemel-en-Aarde cool, not Stellenbosch broad. These are not wines that demand immediate drinking, but the better Pinots are already giving real pleasure now, with most drinking well until 2027 to 2030. The reds built for longer haul will reward patience.
