The von Neipperg family traces its noble roots back to the Holy Roman Empire and has been making wine in Württemberg, Germany, since the 12th century. Their long history is closely tied to their land, and the family still owns an estate in Schwaigern today. In 1971, Count Joseph-Hubert von Neipperg expanded into Bordeaux, acquiring several Saint-Émilion properties, including Château Canon-La-Gaffelière, with a view to building a lasting family legacy.
In 1983, his son Stephan von Neipperg took over Canon-La-Gaffelière at just 26. With a background in finance and agronomy, he undertook major changes in the vineyard and cellar, focusing on maximising terroir expression and long-term quality. His work, later supported by consultant Stéphane Derenoncourt, helped restore the estate’s international reputation.
Located at the southern foot of Saint-Émilion’s slope, the 19.5-hectare vineyard sits on complex clay-limestone and clay-sand soils. Unusually for the appellation, plantings are 55% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the high proportion of Cabernet Franc particularly well suited to the warm soils. The vines, averaging 45 years old, are carefully maintained through mass selection and individual replanting.
