This is truly the pinnacle of the Stadlmann production and a wine that is up with the super-stars. The vineyard of Madel-Hoh belongs to and is worked by the Stadlmann family as it has done for the last 170 years and at present, the vines are 50 years of age and produce the most magnificent fruit.

The wine displays a bouquet of quince, peach, lime and grapefruit with hints of pistacchio behind and a dusting of white pepper. On the palate it is full flavoured and ripe with touches of honey and green tea, a fine acidity and a tight elegant structure. Although it has a residual sugar of just 5 grams, it gives the impression of being off-dry.

This is a wonderful food wine but also is sure to delight any diner at any time.

Vintage report

The 2019 growing season in Niederösterreich was shaped by heat and drought — a pattern becoming familiar across Central Europe, but felt particularly sharply here. A warm, dry summer pushed ripeness levels high and stressed the vines enough to concentrate flavours without the help of any winemaker's intervention. What saved 2019 from becoming simply a blowsy, overripe vintage was a cooler, more temperate stretch in late summer that slowed things down just enough. The result is a harvest that sits in an interesting place: ripe and generous, but with enough tension to keep things honest.

Grüner Veltliner and Riesling — the twin pillars of the region — both performed well, though in different ways. The Grüners have the weight and fruit presence you'd expect from a warm year, but the best examples from Kamptal, Kremstal, and Wachau held onto the peppery grip and mineral cut that gives the variety its point. Riesling from the steep sites did perhaps even better, channelling the heat into concentration rather than flabbiness. These are wines drinking well now, and will continue to do so for several more years; the top single-vineyard Rieslings are worth holding until 2027 or beyond.
