Vintage report
2022 was hot, and Niederösterreich felt every degree of it. A warm, dry growing season — low rainfall across spring and summer, with pronounced heat spikes pushing ripeness fast — meant growers were making quick decisions about when to pick. Those who got the timing right harvested grapes with superb concentration and natural sugar levels, but with enough acidity preserved to keep things lively. The Wachau and Kamptal fared particularly well, with Grüner Veltliner and Riesling from the best sites showing real drive and definition rather than the flabby, overblown character that a lesser vintage might have produced. Vigilance in the vineyard was everything.
The resulting wines are, broadly speaking, rich and expressive — Grüner Veltliner with that characteristic white pepper bite sitting alongside considerable fruit weight, Riesling with a stony precision that cuts through the ripeness. These are not shy wines. The top Smaragd and Erste Lage bottlings are still finding their feet and will reward patience; we'd say most are drinking well now but have plenty to give until 2030 and beyond. Drink the lighter Federspiel and village-level wines sooner.
