The Volnay Premier Cru Clos des Chênes 2019, Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard opens with concentrated red and black cherry, violet and spice aromas, framed by subtle earth and toast. On the palate it’s medium-bodied with firm structure and a more serious, slightly austere profile now, showing depth of fruit, fine delineation and a lingering finish that suggests excellent age potential.
Richer Burgundy reds like this thrive with roast duck, game (venison or wild boar), beef fillet, or mushroom-sauced dishes; aged soft cheeses also complement its complexity.
The 2019 vintage in Burgundy brought warm, dry conditions that helped Pinot Noir achieve ripe, expressive fruit and good structure while maintaining freshness—qualities that benefit more ambitious premiers crus like Clos des Chênes that can age gracefully.
Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard is a respected family estate founded in 1985 in Chassagne-Montrachet and now overseen by Céline Fontaine. Though better known for whites, the domaine’s holdings include precious Premier Cru sites in Volnay and Pommard, and its wines are prized for clarity, terroir expression and classic Burgundian balance through careful viticulture and traditional winemaking.
