Vintage report
The Murray Darling in 2021 sits in a period when the region was finding its feet after years of drought stress, and the season reflected that transition. Rainfall was more generous than the preceding cycles, which eased pressure on growers but demanded careful canopy management to maintain concentration in a warm, inland climate where vines can quickly tip from lush to flabby. Harvest conditions were broadly favourable, with temperatures staying manageable through the picking window — no small thing in a region where heat events can compress everything into a frantic scramble.
The result is a vintage that rewards early drinking rather than cellaring. Reds from Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon show good fruit density and approachable tannins, while whites — particularly Chardonnay and Riverina-style aromatics — are fresh and direct without asking too much of the drinker. These are wines made for the table rather than the cellar: drink them now until around 2026, and enjoy them for exactly what they are rather than what they might become.
