The Teso La Monja 'Victorino' is a black cherry red with a purple rim. An aromatic and intense nose, with myriad notes of wild black fruits (blueberries and blackberries), flowers, herbs, dark chocolate, balsam, pencil lead, cigar ash and sweet baking spices. Powerful, juicy, structured and very concentrated on the palate. Sweetly fruited, with liquorice, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, forest floor and aromatic wood flavours. Very long on the finish with an elemental and mineral aftertaste.

Teso La Monja Victorino is named after Victorino Eguren Ugarte, who established the family winery with his brother Guillermo in Rioja in 1957. The grapes are individually selected before being fermented and then matured in 100% new French oak.

Winemaker Marcos Eguren is a master of the modern style, and given that Toro is seen as the new face of "classic" Spanish red wine this is very much in keeping with that tradition.

Vintage report

The 2023 growing season in Castilla y León was defined by its extremes. A dry spring set nerves jangling early, and summer brought intense heat across the meseta — the kind that pushes ripening fast and demands precise timing at harvest. Growers who read the season well and picked at the right moment were rewarded; those who hesitated found their fruit racing ahead of them. Yields were down in many areas, which tends to concentrate what remains, but the real story is how widely results varied depending on altitude, aspect, and how quickly each producer responded to conditions on the ground.

The wines that came through are showing real depth — Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero with firm, ripe structure and the kind of density that needs time to fully resolve, while Toro produced typically muscular wines where freshness is the variable that separates the good from the great. Bierzo's Mencía, with altitude working in its favour, came through with more poise than the broader plateau. Most reds are drinking well now with air, but the best bottles from serious producers are better left until 2026 and beyond.
