From a single 1.75-hectare vineyard planted in 1975 in Rioja Alavesa, La Nieta is one of the jewels of the Sierra Cantabria family estate. The 2021 vintage is a beautifully polished expression of Tempranillo; rich yet refined, showing aromas of ripe black cherry, plum, violet, and subtle spice, with hints of cedar and mineral undertones from its limestone soils. On the palate, it’s concentrated and silky, with fine-grained tannins, bright acidity, and a long, elegant finish that lingers with notes of dark fruit and cocoa.
The wine is produced at Viñedos de Páganos, a stunning underground winery carved into rock beneath the vineyards. Aged in new French oak, the La Nieta is perfect alongside roast lamb, grilled ribeye, or rich mushroom dishes, it’s a wine that shines with depth and sophistication (and one that will only grow more complex with time in the cellar).
