Vintage report
The 2021 growing season in Hawke's Bay was defined by a cooler, wetter summer than the region typically enjoys, which demanded careful canopy management and selection in the vineyard. A damp February slowed ripening and kept growers on their toes, raising disease pressure particularly in more humid sites. Those who farmed carefully and picked with patience were rewarded — the extended hang time that comes with a cooler season built genuine tension in the fruit, the kind that pushes structure rather than softening it.
The result is a vintage with more freshness and restraint than the blockbuster Hawke's Bay style sometimes invites — no bad thing. Syrah held up particularly well, producing wines with real savouriness and grip, while Bordeaux blends from the Gimblett Gravels show firm tannins and good fruit concentration that still need a little time to settle. These aren't wines to rush. Most reds are drinking well now but will reward patience until 2026 or beyond, while the whites have largely hit their stride.
