The 2020 growing season in Hawke's Bay unfolded with the kind of calm, dry conditions the region rarely takes for granted. Temperatures were warm without tipping into the punishing heat that can strip freshness from the fruit, and growers benefited from good disease pressure management thanks to the dry summer. The result was grapes that arrived at the winery with excellent phenolic ripeness and natural acidity intact — the combination that separates a genuinely good vintage from a merely easy one.

Across the board, 2020 produced wines of real definition. Syrah, always the region's most exciting calling card, delivered concentrated, savoury fruit with structure that suggests these wines are only now hitting their stride. The Bordeaux varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc — fared equally well, with the best examples showing a firmness that rewards patience. Most of the top reds are drinking well now but will continue to develop until the late 2020s. If you've been sitting on bottles, it's worth opening one to check progress.
