Murphy Vineyards Big Rivers Shiraz is classic Aussie Shiraz—bold, juicy, and great value. Bursting with blackcurrant and dark berry fruit, it’s backed by subtle spice, soft tannins, and a smooth, well-balanced structure.

Made by Anthony Murphy of Trentham Estate, it’s everything you'd expect from top-quality Australian winemaking: generous, fruit-forward, and seriously good for the price. A firm favourite with our restaurant clients—and for good reason.

Vintage report

The 2023 vintage in New South Wales arrived after a run of La Niña years that had left growers rather soggy and watchful, so the relatively drier, more settled conditions of 2023 came as something of a relief. That said, it was not without its tensions — parts of the Hunter Valley and Hilltops dealt with uneven ripening and some disease pressure earlier in the season, requiring careful canopy management and selective picking decisions. Those who got their timing right were rewarded.

The wines that emerged tend to sit on the fresher, more precise end of the spectrum — Semillon from the Hunter showing that nervy, citrus-driven austerity that makes the variety so compelling young and so extraordinary old, while Shiraz from across the state has good depth without the jamminess that warmer years can bring. These are not blockbusters built for the cellar, but they are not lightweight either. Most are drinking well now and should hold comfortably until 2028 to 2030, with the best Semillons and Shiraz from serious producers carrying further.

OUR GROWERS

Murphy Vineyards

The Murphy family (of Trentham Estate) has grown grapes in the Murray Darling region of Australia, part of the Big Rivers, since 1909. They build on this experience to create attractive, fruit-driven wines.

The grape selection and winemaking practices at Murphy’s aim to highlight the fruit flavours with these wines. These appealing styles show ripe fruit aromas and soft, rich palates. Murphy Vineyards has selected, from its own plantings, Chardonnay and Shiraz grapes of great quality which display true varietal expression in the final wine.
