Murphy Vineyards Chardonnay is an appealing white wine showing a light green colour with tropical fruit aromas and a soft, fresh palate. No oak was used in either fermentation or ageing, giving a wine of great freshness, with stone fruit aromas to the fore. In the mouth it has a fresh peach quality backed by juicy acidity, and the long finish is a pleasant surprise.

From its own plantings, Murphy Vineyards has selected Chardonnay grapes of good, sound quality which display a true expression of their variety in the final wine.

Vintage report

The 2024 vintage in New South Wales unfolded under conditions that kept growers on their toes from the outset. A wetter-than-average growing season brought some disease pressure in the Hunter Valley and other coastal-influenced zones, demanding careful canopy management and selective harvesting. Those who read the season well and picked at the right moment were rewarded; those who hesitated less so. It was, in short, a vintage that separated the attentive from the complacent.

The resulting wines from the Hunter lean toward freshness and restraint rather than weight, which for Sémillon in particular is no bad thing — the best examples have that razor-sharp acidity that makes the variety so compelling at the table, and the structure to develop meaningfully over time. Shiraz shows good depth without the jammy excess that warmer years can produce. Most reds are drinking well now with a little air, though the better Sémillons are worth sitting on until 2027 and beyond, where they will genuinely repay the patience.

OUR GROWERS

Murphy Vineyards

The Murphy family (of Trentham Estate) has grown grapes in the Murray Darling region of Australia, part of the Big Rivers, since 1909. They build on this experience to create attractive, fruit-driven wines.

The grape selection and winemaking practices at Murphy’s aim to highlight the fruit flavours with these wines. These appealing styles show ripe fruit aromas and soft, rich palates. Murphy Vineyards has selected, from its own plantings, Chardonnay and Shiraz grapes of great quality which display true varietal expression in the final wine.
