Vintage report
The 2023 vintage in Clare Valley arrived after a growing season that kept growers on their toes. A wetter-than-average winter and spring built good soil moisture reserves, but the region then faced the familiar South Australian tightrope walk between ripening grapes fully and avoiding the heat spikes that can strip freshness. By most accounts, Clare navigated it well, with the altitude and the valley's cool nights doing what they always do: buying time, preserving acidity, keeping everything from tipping over the edge.
What landed in the cellar was a vintage that rewards attention. The Rieslings — Clare's calling card — show the crisp, lime-driven tension the valley does better than almost anywhere on earth, with enough fruit weight to drink well now but the structural backbone to repay patience. We'd be happy opening bottles now, though the best examples will sharpen and focus through the late 2020s and beyond. Shiraz looks solid too: concentrated without being overblown, with that characteristic Clare combination of dark fruit and cool-climate lift.
