Vintage report

Aragón in 2020 had the kind of growing season that keeps growers on their toes: a dry, warm year overall, with heat accumulation across the summer that pushed ripeness quickly and demanded careful canopy management, particularly in the lower-altitude vineyards of Cariñena and Campo de Borja. The saving grace was the diurnal range that the region's elevation and continental climate reliably provides, which helped preserve freshness and kept alcohol from running away entirely. Yields were modest, which concentrated what was there.

The wines that emerged tend to be ripe and structured, with Garnacha performing particularly well — showing the kind of generous, plush fruit that the variety delivers when heat is managed rather than simply endured. Carignan added grip and definition where it appeared. These aren't wines that need coaxing into life; most are drinking well now and will continue to do so until around 2026 to 2028 for the mid-tier bottles, with the more serious single-vineyard expressions happy to sit in the cellar a little longer.

OUR GROWERS

Esteban Martín

Bodegas Esteban Martín was founded in 2003 by Miguel Antonio Esteban and Asuncíon Martín. The 400-hectare winery is located in Zaragoza at the foot of the Sierra de Algairen mountains. Family and sustainability are at the heart of the family’s winemaking philosophy. Thirty percent of their vineyards are dedicated to organic grapes and all of their wines are vegan certified. Their estate is located in the Cariñena Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) region, whose wines have aptly earned the nickname Vino de las Piedras, or ‘Wine of Stones.’ These wines have great character and flavour thanks to the region’s rocky terrain, extreme temperature fluctuations throughout the year, and prevailing northerly wind, known locally as the ‘cierzo’.
