Domaine De La Coume Du Roy Alma Grenache Rouge is a lovely deep ruby/garnet colour, with a pure and elegant nose of freshly crushed red and black berry fruit with a whiff of cinnamon behind. The palate is similarly fruity, round and softly tannic, the pristine, ripe berry fruit and juicy acidity are untouched by the influence of oak. A really delicious wine that's equally fun to drink with or without food.

Made from pure Grenache although not stated on the label, matured for 12 months in a closed stainless steel vat and bottled without any oak contact to capture the essence of the ripe grapes. Juicy and simply delicious.

Vintage report

The 2013 growing season across the Languedoc was a stop-start affair that tested growers' nerves. A cool, drawn-out spring pushed budbreak late, and the summer took its time warming up — which in a region more used to brutal heat was, frankly, a novelty. The saving grace was a dry, sunny autumn that allowed grapes to ripen slowly and hold onto their acidity rather than charging headlong into overripeness. Yields were down in places, but the growers who kept their nerve and waited were rewarded.

The result is a vintage that trades the Languedoc's sometimes blowsy, sun-baked character for something more restrained and structured — Grenache and Syrah with genuine tension, reds that feel defined rather than simply ripe. It is not a vintage that announced itself loudly, and it remains relatively under the radar, which makes it good value if you find it. Most well-made reds are drinking well now and will hold comfortably until 2025 to 2027, though the best structured cuvées still have room to breathe.

OUR GROWERS

Domaine De La Coume Du Roy

Domaine De La Coume Du Roy is one of the oldest wineries in Maury, it was founded in 1850 and it has since been managed by six generations of the same family. In 1998, Agnès and Jean-François Bachelet took over the family estate and their primary concern has been to preserve the heritage and to respect the traditions of their viticultural forebears. They work the vines with care and passion and their production is centered on the vins doux naturels of Maury and Muscat de Rivesaltes.
