The 2023 growing season in Beaujolais started with a soggy spring that had vignerons reaching for their wellies more often than they'd like. Summer brought relief with plenty of sunshine, though August proved a bit too generous with the rain just as harvest approached. The key was timing: those who waited for the sun to return in September were rewarded, while early pickers found themselves with diluted fruit that never quite sang.
What emerged from the cellars shows Beaujolais at its most charming and immediate. The Gamay displays lovely red fruit brightness with softer tannins than we saw in 2022, making these wines utterly gulpable from release. We're particularly smitten with how the cru villages handled the vintage - Morgon and Moulin-à-Vent show real substance without losing that joyful Beaujolais bounce. Most bottles are drinking superbly now, though the better cru examples will happily cellar until 2030.
