An absolutely classic Piemontese red that's simply packed with red fruits such as raspberry and plum with notes of violets above.

It was vinified solely in stainless steel so there's no oak influence to muddy the flavours and aromas. It's fresh and lively and just the thing to drink with pasta with a meat sauce or even roast meats.

This was the first wine from Anna Maria that we encountered and ever since it has remained a firm favourite. Laden with fruit it works so well in every season with the food available or even just to sip and savour as an aperitif with a piece of cheese or salami.

Vintage report

The 2024 growing season in Piedmont was defined by rain — a lot of it, particularly through spring and into summer, which kept growers anxious and their tractors busy. Pressure from mildew and other fungal disease was a real concern across the Langhe and Monferrato, and those who managed their vineyards most attentively saw the clearest reward come harvest. A warmer, drier spell in late summer and into September gave the fruit a chance to recover and ripen properly, and cooler nights helped preserve the acidity that Nebbiolo in particular needs to hold its shape. Yields were down in many cellars, but concentration followed.

It is early days for 2024, and we would be cautious about anyone who claims to know exactly how it will all unfold. What we can say is that the wines from growers we trust show good structure, genuine freshness, and none of the overripeness that can flatten a Barolo vintage. Barbera and Dolcetto, which tend to be more forgiving in difficult years, look particularly well-suited to early drinking. The Nebbiolo-based wines will need time — three to five years at a minimum for the better Barolos, with the finest probably not hitting their stride until 2032 or beyond.

OUR GROWERS

Anna Maria Abbona

Anna Maria Abbona is a remarkable estate located in the picturesque hills near Dogliani. Anna Maria herself is a delightful lady whose charm and passion is very much reflected in her wines.

The estate carries a rich history that stretches back to 1936, when her grandfather, Angelo, planted the first vineyard known as Maioli. Anna Maria and her husband took over the estate in 1989. While their hearts lie with the Dolcetto grape that earned the region DOCG status, their portfolio showcases other eminent Langhe grape varieties.
