This appellation spreads throughout the Cote de Nuits, from Corgoloin to Fixin but this particular vineyard is in Corgoloin at the top of the slope and close to the marble quarry.

It makes very impressive Pinot Noir wines and this is certainly no exception. The aromas are of red and black fruits with some floral notes above, a touch of vanilla too and it is perfectly at home with some feathered game, poultry and red meats. Designed for drinking early, it will reward a year or two of cellaring especially with a roast pheasant or suchlike. A great value bottle of wine.

Vintage report

The 2019 vintage in Burgundy delivered exactly what vignerons needed after a string of challenging years: a textbook growing season that let the grapes ripen slowly and evenly. Spring arrived gently, summer stayed warm without punishing heat spikes, and crucially, September brought those cool nights that preserve acidity whilst allowing full phenolic ripeness. We find ourselves talking about 2019 as one of those vintages where nature simply cooperated, giving winemakers healthy fruit with natural balance rather than forcing them to correct for extremes in the cellar.

What emerged are Burgundies with remarkable freshness married to genuine depth—the Pinot Noirs show that silky texture and bright red fruit character that makes great Burgundy so compelling, whilst the Chardonnays have both the mineral backbone and subtle richness that age beautifully. The quality runs impressively deep across all appellations, from village wines that drink like premier crus to grand crus that remind you why Burgundy commands such devotion. These wines are drinking beautifully now if you fancy them young and vibrant, though we suspect the better bottles will reward patience well into the 2030s.

OUR GROWERS

Pierre Meurgey

Pierre Meurgey is a fourth-generation winemaker. His half-Mâcon and half- Beaune roots are expressed through two signatures; By Meurgey-Croses and By Pierre Meurgey, respectively. For his Mâcon wines, Pierre works with only one origin per appellation, controlling the date and conditions of the harvest. The alcoholic fermentation and ageing all take place in vats – 400 or 600 litre demi-muids – or 228-litre oak barrels depending on the appellation. In his Beaune production, the grapes are partially or totally destemmed, then vinified in open vats. Regular pumping over produces wines with ripe fruit flavours, balanced by the freshness imparted by the clay-limestone soils. The wines are then aged for 10 to 18 months in French oak barrels, with a reasoned proportion of new barrels.
