The 2018 growing season in Languedoc was warm and generous, though not without its tests. A dry, hot summer — hotter than average across much of the south — was punctuated by well-timed rainfall that eased stress on the vines at critical moments. That balance matters enormously here, where Grenache and Carignan can tip quickly from ripe to overcooked if conditions don't play nicely. By and large, they did. Yields were reasonable, and growers who managed their canopy carefully — increasingly the norm in a region that has quietly transformed itself over the past two decades — brought in fruit with real concentration and freshness intact.

The wines that resulted tend to be full-bodied and generous without being heavy, with Grenache-dominant blends showing particular form: structured, warm-fruited, and with enough acidity to give them shape. Carignan, as ever when yields are kept in check, delivered depth and a savoury backbone that stops these wines becoming one-dimensional. Most are drinking very well now, and the better domaines have wines with the stuffing to go another five years comfortably. Not a vintage to overthink — open, pour, enjoy.
