In their youth, Château Musar Reds are dense and richly-textured, with intense ‘baked fruit’ characters: plums, damsons, cranberries, cherries, figs and dates. Bordeaux grape Cabernet Sauvignon lends black fruit flavours; Rhône grapes Cinsault and Carignan contribute fragrance (violets; pepper) and supple spiciness.

Either set of qualities might dominate a particular vintage, but the style is always emphatically Lebanese: enticingly aromatic, with persistent fruit flavours.

Vintage report

The 2008 growing season in the Bekaa Valley was broadly favourable, with the region's high altitude and wide diurnal temperature swings doing what they reliably do — keeping acidity fresh and aromatics precise through a long, measured ripening season. Lebanon's vineyards had by this point been through enough modern cycles of investment and winemaking improvement that the vintage's character reflects both decent raw conditions and a generation of producers who had learned, often the hard way, how to read their terroir. Nothing in 2008 stands out as dramatically difficult or dramatically exceptional; it sits in the quietly reliable bracket.

The wines that came from it — particularly from Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and the Cinsault that thrives at altitude — tend to show the Bekaa's characteristic combination of dark fruit and dry, almost dusty structure, with the acidity to keep things honest. Sixteen-plus years on, the better reds from serious producers are drinking well now, with the tannins settled and the fruit still present. We wouldn't hold on much longer — drink up until 2028 for most, though the most serious bottlings may comfortably outlast that.

OUR GROWERS

Château Musar

Château Musar is a leading Lebanese wine producer located in the Bekaa Valley. Vines have been cultivated in this valley for at least the last 6,000 years: the Phoenicians (seafaring ancestors of the modern Lebanese) brought both vines and wines from Byblos across all areas around the Mediterranean. Flanked by snow-covered mountains and nestled at 1000 meters above sea level, the serenely beautiful Bekaa Valley is blessed with 300 days of sunshine a year, fresh mountain breezes and an average temperature of 25°C (encompassing snowy winters and hot summers). While the Château Musar vineyards were ‘organic’ by default before the term was coined, they also became the first producer in Lebanon to achieve organic certification for its vineyards in 2006.
