Following years of persistence and study, Andy and Ali’s winemaking dreams materialized in the form of Celler Alimara in Terra Alta, Catalonia. The vineyards are located at Mas de Cabrera, near Gandesa, 400m above sea level on chalk and clay soils. The hot and dry summers are influenced by two prevailing winds: the Cierzo blowing from the interior and the Garbí bringing more humid air from the Mediterranean.
Celler Alimara adopts the “Lutte Raisonée” philosophy in the vineyard meaning that organic/biodynamic principles are followed unless extreme circumstances dictate the need for pesticides or other chemicals. Apart from ploughing, all work in the vineyard is done by hand.

Llumí Negre 2020 is a blend of Grenache (47%), Carignan (47%) and Hairy Grenache (6%). This is a fruit-forward wine rich with dark bramble, plum and spice. The persistent fruit overlaid by coffee and burnt caramel notes is complimented by a subtle acidity and juicy tannins.

A perfect barbecue beverage that will have you reaching for another glass.

OUR GROWERS

Celler Alimara

Celler Alimara is owned and run by husband and wife duo Andy & Ali McLeod, however the winery is a true family affair. The estate was actually discovered by their son Rob and his partner Elena who were excited by the potential of Terra Alta’s wine. The name “Alimara,” meaning “beacon” in Catalan, symbolises the McLeod family’s desire to bring attention to emerging quality and diversity of wines from this region. Just as fire beacons were used to swiftly transmit signals between towns and populations, the family wants Celler Alimara to act as a beacon, carrying a message of Terra Alta’s growing reputation to the rest of the world. “Llumí,” meaning “match,” represents the spark that ignites the flames, while “El Senyal,” meaning “signal,” represents their message.
