The 2022 growing season in Tuscany was a proper test of character, and thankfully most producers passed with flying colours. A scorching summer saw temperatures regularly nudge 40°C, whilst rainfall was about as rare as a modest wine critic. The saving grace came from those precious diurnal temperature swings that Chianti Classico and Montalcino do so well, keeping the nights refreshingly cool even when the days felt positively biblical. Many smart vignerons picked earlier than usual, sometimes under cover of darkness, racing to preserve that vital freshness before the relentless heat could flatten their fruit. What emerged from the cellars has been rather special, though not without its quirks. We find the 2022 Sangiovese displays gorgeous concentration and depth, with riper tannins than the classic 2019s but more backbone than the plush 2020s. The best examples marry intense dark fruit with that mineral precision we adore in great Tuscan reds, whilst the lesser sites sometimes show a touch too much heat. Quality varies more than usual, making producer selection absolutely crucial. These wines are drinking beautifully now if you fancy immediate gratification, but the top Chiantis and Brunellos have decades ahead of them. We reckon the sweet spot for most will be 2028 onwards, when that youthful exuberance settles into something truly magnificent.
