Bodegas Señorío de Arana, Viña Del Oja Rioja Gran Reserva has a developed nose of dried red berries, a touch of vanilla, some gamey notes and a hint of raw meat. The palate is full, soft, elegant and well developed, with balsamic, spicy and methol notes and a silkiness that lingers all the way through the very long finish. A great bottle of wine.

A blend of 90% Tempranillo, 5% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano from the finest vineyards of the Rioja Alavesa, this Gran Reserva was matured in French and American oak casks for 30 months before being bottled and left to develop further.

Vintage report

Mother Nature served up a proper curveball in 2017, delivering one of those vintages that kept Rioja's winemakers on their toes from start to finish. Spring arrived with late frosts that had growers lighting fires in their vineyards, followed by a summer that swung between scorching heat and unexpected rainfall. The growing season felt like a game of chess against the weather, with harvest timing becoming absolutely critical as producers rushed to pick before autumn rains could dilute what they'd worked so hard to achieve.

What emerged were wines with real personality - leaner and more mineral-driven than the plush 2016s, with Tempranillo showing particular freshness and vivid red fruit character rather than the deeper, more brooding profile of easier years. We find these 2017s have an almost Burgundian tension to them, built more on finesse than power. The quality varies more than usual - this was a vintage where skilled winemaking truly mattered - but the best bottles are drinking beautifully now and should hold their nerve until 2030.

OUR GROWERS

Bodegas Señorío de Arana

While the Santiago family, owners of Señorío de Arana and Viña del Oja, have been growing grapes in the Rioja region for over one hundred years, the bodega was only founded in the 1970s. Today, the family owns around 100 hectares of vines in the villages of Labastida in the Rioja Alavesa and San Vicente de la Sonsierra in the Rioja Alta. The family’s experience growing traditional Spanish varietals like Garnacha, Tempranillo, Graciano, Mazuelo combined with Rioja’s chalky, silty soils result in the high-quality wines that are true expressions of the terroir.
