Baglio Gibellina’s U Passimiento 2025 is a generous, fruit-filled Sicilian red that borrows a trick from the passito tradition. It blends 70% Nero d’Avola with 30% Frappato, combining fresh, juicy fruit from the Frappato with Nero d’Avola grapes left on the vine to partially dry, concentrating their flavour and richness.
Expect ripe cherry, red berries and plum, with a hint of raisin and spice. It’s warm and rounded, with supple tannins and enough fresh acidity to keep things lively. A crowd-pleaser with real character, it’s made for a slow-cooked beef ragù, a hearty sausage pasta or a board of Italian cheeses.

Vintage report
The 2025 vintage in Sicily is still revealing itself, but early signs point to a season that rewarded patience and nerve. Summer brought the usual Mediterranean heat, though without the punishing extremes that can shut down vines entirely, whilst autumn allowed for measured picking decisions across the island's diverse terrain. The volcanic soils of Etna and the limestone hills of western Sicily each told their own story, with altitude proving its worth once again in moderating what could have been a bruising year.
What emerged from the cellars shows Sicily's modern winemaking at its most confident. The native varieties have responded brilliantly: Nero d'Avola displays proper concentration without the jammy heaviness that plagued earlier decades, whilst Carricante from Etna crackles with mineral precision. These wines are drinking well now for those who enjoy fruit-forward styles, though we suspect the better examples will reward cellaring until 2030 and beyond. It's a vintage that captures Sicily's ability to balance power with freshness, sun with restraint.
We think this wine would go well with
Vineyards here sit on the warm, sun-drenched plains of western Sicily, with calcareous clay soils that retain just enough moisture through the long, dry summers. The Belice Valley benefits from cooling breezes off the nearby coast, which helps preserve acidity in grapes that might otherwise ripen into blunt, jammy fruit. It's a landscape built for generous ripeness tempered by just enough freshness to keep wines like this one lively.
This wine is bottled as Terre Siciliane IGT, the broad regional designation that gives Sicilian producers freedom to blend varieties and experiment with styles outside the stricter DOC rules. It's become something of a playground for growers wanting to showcase indigenous grapes like Nero d'Avola and Frappato in fresher, more contemporary expressions. Compared to the more traditional Sicilia DOC, IGT wines like this one trade formality for flexibility, and often for a good deal more fun.
