Wooing Tree Vineyard is a family-owned producer in Cromwell, at the heart of Central Otago. Steve and Thea Farquharson established the vineyard in 2001, with the first vintage following in 2005. The name comes from a mature tree on the original property, which had long been a local meeting place for couples and ultimately became the winery’s defining landmark.
Pinot Noir is at the heart of Wooing Tree’s production, well suited to Cromwell’s dry continental climate, high sunshine hours and cool nights. Vineyard work is largely manual, with careful pruning, shoot and bunch thinning and canopy management. In 2021, the family acquired the 20-hectare Pink Moon Vineyard beneath the Pisa Range and transplanted around 20,000 vines from the original site. The new vineyard now has around 16 hectares of Pinot Noir, alongside smaller plantings of Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer.
Pinot Noir is typically hand-picked, gently extracted and matured in French oak. The range also includes rosé and Blondie, a white wine made from Pinot Noir grapes, reflecting the estate’s willingness to experiment alongside its focus on classic Central Otago Pinot.
