Giaconda is a highly regarded small wine estate located near Beechworth in north-east Victoria. The vineyards sit at about 400 metres altitude on steep, granite-rich soils — a cool site that produces naturally low yields and wines with strong acidity and structure, particularly suited to Chardonnay and Rhône varieties.
The estate was founded in the early 1980s by Rick Kinzbrunner, an engineer who had previously worked in Bordeaux and Burgundy. Inspired by European estates, he planted the vineyard in 1982 and built a gravity-fed winery into the hillside to minimise handling of the wines.
Today Giaconda remains family owned, with Rick still involved and his son Nathan Kinzbrunner now leading the winemaking. Production is small, and the estate has become best known for its Chardonnay, widely considered one of Australia’s benchmark examples.
