Niepoort is an independent family business since 1842. Through five generations, the business has passed successfully from one Niepoort to the next, and in most cases, older and younger generation worked side by side.
Dirk is now head of the business, since the formal retirement of Eduard Rudolph Niepoort in 2005. Dirk's passion for wines and the humble respect and curiosity for the Douro terroir defined the Niepoort spirit over the last two decades and is a constant inspiration and challenge to the team.

Vintage report
The 2005 growing season in the Douro delivered the kind of conditions that winemakers quietly dream about: a dry summer with enough heat to push ripeness without the scorching stress that plagued some earlier decades, and a harvest that came in at an unhurried pace with good concentration across the board. Yields were modest, which in the Douro's schist-rooted vineyards tends to mean the wines carry genuine substance rather than watered-down ambition.
The result was a vintage of serious structure and dark, brooding fruit character — particularly from Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, which both performed with real authority. Whether in Vintage Port or the increasingly impressive unfortified reds, 2005 produced wines built to last. The best are drinking superbly now, with that grip slowly softening into something more generous, though the top Vintage Ports will reward patience until 2030 and well beyond. If you have bottles, open one and check how far along yours are — this is a vintage worth revisiting regularly.
