Château Sansonnet 2014 is a really complex, well fruited and brooding St Emilion with excellent structure and plenty of finesse. The classic pencil shaving notes are to be found here together with some dark cherry and blueberry fruit. There's still over a decade left to drink this rascal and cellaring will amply reward the patient.

Château Sansonnet is situated on the highest point of the exceptional clay limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion. The vineyard is 7 hectares in size, and is one unique holding adjacent to classified great growth vineyards. The proportions of grape varieties planted are 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc.

From Robert Parker's Wine Advocate:

It has a decadent nose but unlike some of its more hubristic peers, here it is more complex and defined, nicely interwoven with the new oak, and offers some irresistible floral scents with time. The palate is full-bodied with fleshy black cherry and blackcurrant fruit, a pleasant saline touch with plenty of tension and freshness on the finish. It is a modern-style of Saint Emilion and unequivocally one of the better examples of the genre.

OUR GROWERS

Château Sansonnet

Located at the east end of Saint-Émilion, on the highest point of the plateau, Château Sansonnet is neighbour to a number of the great classified growth Bordeaux properties. The Marquis Francois D'Aulan Suarez, former owner of Pieper Heidsieck, acquired the chateau in 1999 and invested a great deal of money into renovating the winery and vineyards. In 2009, the Lefévère family, owners of a construction company and of Chateau Tour-Robert in Pomerol, bought the estate, appointing Marie-Bénédicte Lefévère-Leymarie as its head. In 2012, Château Sansonnet was promoted to the tight circle of Saint-Émilion's Grands Crus Classés. This distinction was just reward for all of the hard work of Marie-Bénédicte and her team.
