The name “Kanonkop” derives from the hillock (kop) perched atop the Simonsberg mountain which overlooks the estate. During the 17th and 18th centuries, a cannon (kanon) sat on this hillock, used to announce the arrival of sailing ships entering Table Bay. Today, the estate is managed by brothers Paul and Johann Krige whose family has tended the land since 1973. They carry on their family’s winemaking practices, setting their harvest dates not only based on sugar ripeness but also on the degree of tannins present in the skins, the balance of acidity and the development of the pips. Each grape varietal is monitored to ensure it is picked at peak quality.
